One of the best Session Zero experiences I’ve had is now complete. We met some new folks, introduced the setting and playstyle, and kicked off character creation. Two of the eight players couldn’t make it due to family obligations, but we’ll be scheduling one-on-one catch-up sessions soon.
The group responded really well to the MESH playstyle. They liked the flexibility to try new characters or step back when life gets busy, which is exactly what the system is meant to support.
The End of the Institute setting was also well received. Players seemed excited about stepping into the aftermath of the upheaval, uncovering what happened, and trying to survive the ongoing horrors.
So far, we’ve got all the major player archetypes represented and most of the Institute’s new departments staffed. As an added mechanic, I’ve introduced a small perk tied to each character’s department or role. Players will receive a special piece of equipment and either a skill or a permanent once-per-day cypher.
I also revealed a key campaign twist. Each story arc will feature a “target player” who faces a unique threat beyond the arc’s main conflict. This might involve being hunted, stalked, observed, or manipulated in some way. It adds another layer of tension and mystery to each cycle.
One player pitched an especially interesting concept, and we’ll be collaborating on a custom focus called “Will Cut a Bitch.” Once finalized, I’ll publish it on the mechanics page. I have a feeling this one is going to be a lot of fun.
We did get tool consent from the group, though I had to adjust SeaVoice afterward. It crashed midway through the session, and I didn’t catch it in time, so unfortunately we don’t have a full transcript of Session Zero.
Best of all, the chemistry between the players was incredible. Their collaboration in building Cypher character connections felt natural and engaged. The excitement in the room was clear, and I’m feeling lucky to have found this crew.
We haven’t locked in the date for our first full session yet, and with the holidays approaching it may take a bit. But I’m already looking forward to what’s ahead.
Stay tuned for the start of the story and stylized recaps after each session.
